［多文化情報］About Christmas 2 クリスマスについて ②

Last time we talked about traditional Christmas food and celebrations. This time let’s talk about exchanging presents and December 26th, Boxing Day.
前回はクリスマスの過ごし方や伝統的な料理について紹介しました。今回はプレゼント交換と12月26日のイベントについて紹介します。

In Japan, often parents give presents to their children, and older people exchange presents with their partners. But what about in Canada or Britain? Who do you think people normally exchange presents with?
日本では、親が子供にプレゼントあげたり、恋人同士が交換したりするのはよくありますが、カナダやイギリスでは誰と交換するのが一般的でしょうか。

b) Friends
c) Pets
d) No one

Most people exchange presents with family, including distant relatives. Many people also exchange presents with close friends. At school or work, sometimes there will be a “secret santa” exchange, where people buy a present for another coworker / classmate without telling them who it’s from. It’s like a game, but for giving presents
家族や遠い親戚と交換する人がほとんどですが、仲の良い友達と交換する人も多いでしょう。学校や職場では「シークレットサンタ」というプレゼント交換をやることもあります。一人ひとりがプレゼントを用意し、匿名でくじ引きで引いた仲間に渡すゲーム感覚でのプレゼント交換です。

Normally, people keep presents under the Christmas until its time to open them.
プレゼントを開けるまで、クリスマスツリーの元に置いておくのが一般的です。

So, when do you think people open their presents? では、いつプレゼントを開けるでしょうか。

a) Christmas (Dec. 25th)
b) Christmas Eve (Dec. 24th)
c) Boxing Day (Dec. 26th)
d) New Years Eve (Dec. 31st)

Most families open their presents on Christmas day. Often in the morning, but sometimes at night. But some families also open some or all of their presents on Christmas Eve. It all depends on the family
多くの家庭では25日のクリスマスの朝もしくは夜にプレゼントを開けますが、前日のイブに開けることもあります。家庭の習慣はそれぞれです。

Last, let’s talk about “Boxing Day”. Boxing Day is a holiday (but not a public holiday) celebrated on Dec. 26th in some countries like Canada and Britain. It’s after everyone has already opened their presents. What do you think happens on boxing day?
Boxing Dayは26日にある（祝日ではない）イベントです。カナダやイギリスにある休日です。皆がクリスマスプレゼントを開けた翌日ですが、何があるでしょうか。

a) Cleaning up boxes
b) Sports event
c) Bargain sales
d) Family dinner

Just like during “Hatsu-uri” in Japan, Boxing day is when a lot of stores have big sales. Often this is to get rid of stuff that was not bot for Christmas. It’s such a busy day that often transit services provide extra service to help shoppers get around.
「Boxing Day」には日本の初売りのように多くの店が大規模セールを実施し、売り残り等を処分しようとする。多くの人が買いに行くため、公共交通機関が臨時便を出すことも多々ある。
