In Japan, spending New Years (especially New Year’s Eve) with your family is very common. Every year, lots of families travel at the end of the year to visit their families. Many people then enjoy shopping during New Year’s sales, looking for deals. During the sales, “lucky bags” (福袋) are one popular item. Many stores make unique packages of goods to sell then.
日本では、お正月や大晦日を家族と過ごすのがよくあることですね。毎年、年末になると多くの人が実家に帰省します。お正月には、初売りで買い物を楽しみ、お得な商品を探す人も多いでしょう。その中でも「福袋」は人気のアイテムで、特別なセットを販売する店も多いですよね。

In many English speaking countries (like America, Canada, and Britain), it’s more common to spend New Year’s Eve with friends. Having parties or going to countdown events is common. New Year’s is more a time to party than a time to spend with family. Because many people go out to party, many cities have buses and trains run all night.
英語圏の多くの国（アメリカやカナダ、イギリスなど）では、大みそかを友達と過ごすことがより一般的です。パーティーをしたり、カウントダウンイベントに参加したりする人が多く、お正月は家族と過ごすというよりも、にぎやかに友達と楽しむ時間となっています。多くの人が外に出て遊ぶため、都市によってはバスや電車が特別に終夜運転を行います。

Christmas is seen as a time to spend with family. Like how many Japanese people eat traditional foods (osechi) at New Year’s, people often eat a traditional meal with their family.
クリスマスは家族と過ごすのがよくあることです。日本で多くの人が元旦におせち料理を食べるように、英語圏ではクリスマスに家族と伝統的な料理を食べることが一般的です。
